So how do you shrink your belly?

I know when you think about reducing belly fat it's a daunting task. You see yourself having to do grueling workouts or a ton of sit ups. Well sit ups are good for toning your belly but stomach muscles alone are not enough. The best way to remove belly fat is a combination of changing your eating habits, so your body stores less fat, and doing cardio exercises to burn fat that is already there.

Some causes of Belly Fat and ways to reduce belly fat

1. Slow Metabolism

As we get older, our metabolism tends to slow down. That means you don't burn calories as fast as you did when you were younger. A slower metabolism can also result in extra storage of fat....particularly around the middle.  Your metabolism dictates how effectively the calories you take in are used.  Each person has their own individual daily caloric needs, called the Basal Metabolic Rate.

 2. Eating Late at Night

If you want to control your belly fat, you should never eat within three hours of your bedtime. You want your food to have a chance to fully digest before you retire for the evening.

Going to bed with a full stomach puts you at greater risk for fat storage around the middle area. If you are going to munch late at night, eat something healthy like a banana or a small handful of almonds. Careful nutrition and watching when and what you eat will go a long way in helping you figure out how to lose weight around your mid-section.

3. Genetics

There are two common body types: apple and pear. If you gain and store fat in lower parts of your body then you would be considered pear-shaped.  If you are the kind of person that stores more fat in your stomach and middle section than anywhere else then you would be considered apple-shaped.

Think about your relatives, especially those that are overweight. If a lot of them are heavier around the middle area then it's quite possible that you have the genes that make you genetically apple-shaped when you put on excess weight.

Meaning your body is more likely to store its fat in your stomach than anywhere else.

4. Being a couch potato

The one proven method to keep the fat in your belly is to be a couch potato. Consistent inactivity will lead to a build-up of fat inside the belly. Using the remote control to flip the channels does not count as exercise. If you have to watch TV then multitask. If you have a treadmill walk or run on it while you watch your shows. Maybe some ab crunches would be helpful as well. It is possible to improve your fitness while watching TV. You just need to do more than sitting on the coach and channel surfing, to get rid of belly fat for good.

What's The Best Way To Get Rid Of Belly Fat?

You can't target your midsection - or any other area of your body - for weight loss, but research does suggest that cardiovascular exercise is especially effective for reducing abdominal fat.

You simply cannot make fat disappear from any area of your body by targeting it with exercise. Nor can you do it by zapping the area with a patch, or taking a pill "specially designed to reduce your spare tire". But that doesn't stop unscrupulous infomercials from trying to sell a whole host of devices that supposedly have the power to shrink your belly. This fact also does not stop many people from buying these products or believing that crunches and other ab exercises are a good way to melt away abdominal fat.

In reality, your body is predisposed to lose and gain weight in a genetically predetermined pattern, which is different for every individual. You can't change this pattern, but you can lose weight all over your body by eating fewer calories than you burn off. When you lose weight, some of it will come off your belly. This is especially true, research suggests, if you engage in cardio exercise as part of your weight-loss program.

So does that mean that exercising your belly is a waste of time? Most definitely not. The ab exercises you perform will do a great job to strengthen and tone the muscles underneath your abdominal fat. Stronger ab muscles also help you stand up straighter, and better poster makes your stomach look smaller even if you don't lose an ounce of fat.
